Magazine advert in progress

Currently I am editing my magazine advert on Word, like I did for my digipak.

After analysing some magazine adverts produced for other indie artists/bands I noticed how most use artwork that relates to their album rather than images of themselves. I especially liked this feature as by using images that can be related to the band also advertises them through synergy. I chose not to use the images I used on my digipak as I didn't want to 'over-do' the images of Janadhi working out. Instead I chose to use the establishing shot of our music video as the background.

I also decided to keep the advert simple, which was a feature I took inspiration from the Arctic Monkey's advert, however I also wanted to include some extra information such as the exclusive content and the website, I am also planning on adding some information about the songs that are included.

Magazine adverts

Magazine adverts act as an extra platform of advertisement to attract new audiences, sell a song or an album or even promote an artist or a band. I will be creating a magazine advert to sell my band's album 'The rhythm within us.'

Features that are found on a conventional magazine advert are:
  • The release date
  • The album/ song title
  • The iconic image of the album cover
  • The artist's or band's name
  • Information about album
  • Where it is available for purchase
  • The record label logo
Using the internet I found a few adverts from a variety of different genres; Pop, Indie rock and Rap.
I found that with the rap and pop genre the magazine adverts (Wretch 32 and Madonna) had extremely hectic designs with array of different colours and lots of text. They also showcase the artist as the main feature of the advert, using voyeurism is a good way to draw attention, especially when the focus is on a well known star, such as Adele, as it immediately lets the readers know that this is a famous artist and you should watch or listen to their music.

Whereas the indie advert featuring The Arctic Monkey's advert shows a simple design of their album logo with limited text and information. I much prefer the AM's design as it's simplicity makes it much easier to read which would help in drawing in audiences, especially as using a star image would be tricky when advertising a band.

From my research,  I found that many bands do not use pictures of themselves to sell their music, instead they create iconic logos which are famously associated with them. Many logos do not even need to include the band's name for audiences to recognise them, for example the Scissor Sisters and the Rolling Stones rarely include text when advertising themselves.
